What is Pando?
Utah is home to one of the most amazing organisms in the world – a colony of aspen trees estimated to be over 80,000 years old. This colony was named “Pando” (a Latin word meaning “to spread”). It is the oldest know organism, and the largest organism in the world by weight. It is a global treasure and it is right here in our home state of Utah! You can visit the Pando tree colony in Fishlake National Forest.
What makes Pando Tree Company unique?
Our perspective.
We created Pando Tree Company to spread high-quality, future-focused tree care around the Wasatch Front. Our forward thinking services are designed to work towards an urban forest of high quality trees not just for now, but for generations to come.
Our equipment.
Our high standard of quality doesn’t stop at tree care. Heavy equipment including bucket trucks, cranes, skid steers, etc. can leave behind damage to property including torn sod, skid marks, ruts, awning damage, oil stains, broken pavement, and more. We at Pando are proud to explicitly use roped climbing techniques to access a tree’s canopy as well as advanced rigging techniques to protect your property. We use a combination of tried and true rigging methods along with next-gen techniques to do the best job possible.
Not all trees can be climbed safely. For trees that require heavy machinery (dead or fallen tree removals), arborists at Pando are also experts in crane work.
Our team.
Pando Tree Company accepts only the best for your trees and we accept only best for our team. Your estimates will always be conducted by a company partner, and there will always be a partner on site conducting your work.
Beware of companies who advertise ISA certifications. More often than not the owner is certified, but the workers on site managing and performing the job are not.
Our community involvement.
We believe in promoting learning about our forests, both urban and rural. In particular we care about the well-being of our namesake, the Pando Tree colony. It is in decline and currently being researched. If you would like to volunteer check out the Friends of Pando voluteer organization.
Keep an eye on our events for Arbor Day activities.
Liscenced and Insured ?
Fun fact. There is no license to conduct tree work. Forestry is the #1 most lethal occupation in the US, but anybody with a chainsaw can legally do tree work for you. Tree services advertising "Licensed and Insured" must be talking about a business license. There is an organization called ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) that provides certifications, but they are not required. Unfortunately, some of the worst arborists we have worked with held ISA certifications. Don't put your trust in a company just because the flaunt and "ISA Certified" badge.
Given how dangerous tree work is, DO NOT HIRE any company that does not provide a certificate of liability. If something happens on site without it, you become the responsible party. Our certificate of liability can be found here.
Our services.
We offer a wide range of tree related services. A number of these are only offered by Pando. The list below provides an overview, follow the links for more details.
Treescaping and Soil Analysis: Prevention goes a long way with trees. Much of the work we do involves correcting previously made mistakes including poor choice of planting location or species selection. Get help designing your treescape from a tree expert to minimize the amount of work required in the future.
If you are interested in transforming your yard into a xeriscape (low water use), request a quote!
Tree Planting: Most trees are planted incorrectly and can result in slow growth, poor health, or death. Get help from a qualified arborist to ensure the best planting for your new tree.
Air Spading / Root Crown Excavation: Poorly planted trees can be helped by exposing the root crown with compressed air, as well as injecting nitrogen into the soil. If you missed our expert planting service, we can still help rectify the mistakes of whoever planted your tree.
Tree Pruning (sometimes called tree trimming): We prune trees and shrubs of all shapes and sizes. Reasons to prune may include structural health, hazard reduction, clearance, deadwood removal, managing a viewpoint, aesthetics, disease mitigation, fruit production, and more. Newly planted trees develop best if they are pruned yearly. Mature trees can be pruned on 3 to 5 year cycles.
Pando Tree Company goes above and beyond servicing your trees. We speak with you about your goals and come up with a plan that works for you and your trees. Most tree services will prune whenever you call them. At Pando we know each species has different characteristics and has different pruning/timing needs. Don't let anybody else touch your trees!
Pollarding Contracts: Pollarding is a special type of pruning that helps maintain a certain size. The downside of pollarding is that they require annual pruning that if not done, can lead to hazardous limbs. To keep things safe, we will only pollard with a long-term contract.
Shrub care: Shrubs have much in common with trees, but there are a number of differences. Regular maintenance helps flower production. Overgrown shrubs like lilac and snowball benefit from rejuvenation prunes. Keep your hedges high and tight with Pando's experts.
Topiary: This is the art of sculpting shrubs into geometric shapes, animals, your imagination is the limit! Well done topiary requires frequent pruning (2 to 5 times per year), use of advanced techniques (such as cages), and an artist’s eye.
Fruit Tree care and Fruit Harvesting: Fruit trees require unique pruning techniques. Some fruit tree owners will want to prune for fruit production, others might want to prune to reduce fruit production. If your tree is too large to reach fruit on your own, we can also help retrieving fruit and finding a home for your bountiful surplus.
Repurposed Wood: Our team of arborists include artisan crafters who can turn your old tree into a unique keepsake. We make interior decor, mailboxes, chainsaw sculptures, furniture, kitchenware, birdhouses, and other commissioned work. We also work with independent woodworkers to repurpose material into something of value instead of going to the dump. Crafters who are interested in retrieving material including logs, crotches, branches, etc. can contact us.
Structural support systems: Concerns of branches falling can be mitigated with static or dynamic cabling systems. Bolts can be installed to support splitting branch unions. Heavy limbs near the ground (common with fruit trees) can benefit from wooden props installed into the ground to help support a branches weight so that it doesn’t fail.
Fire Mitigation: The treat of fire damage and trees go hand in hand. Protect your property from fires with expert care and advice from a qualified arborist.
Storm Damage: Heavy winds and snow can cause serious damage to trees. These events can result in home-owner emergencies. We consider it a public duty to help storm damage victims restore their property. In the event of a storm, other scheduled work may be postponed until storm damage cleanup has subsided.
Tree Removal: Many times we encourage the use of pruning or structural support systems to reduce hazards, but some trees are too dangerous (either dead, diseased, rotting, splitting, or severely declining) and should be removed. Removing trees can be very complicated and dangerous. Make sure you have an expert carrying out these types of projects.
Stump Grinding: Many species will sprout back after being cut down. Dead stumps can also prohibit landscaping projects such as laying down sod or planting a new tree. Removing stumps by hand is very difficult and may take years. We use a specialized stump grinder to quickly reduce a stump into mulch.
Bonsai Boarding: Our team of arborists are knowledgeable in the art of bonsai. We know how much you love them and how much care they require. If you go out of town and need expert care for your trees, we are up to the task.
Cat and Drone Rescue: Fire departments recommend calling an arborist for cat rescue. Our unique ability to access the canopy of a tree allows us to be the neighborhood hero.
Christmas Light Installation and Rental: Our unique ability to access a tree’s canopy also enables us to install exquisite light designs for the holiday season.
Christmas Trees: During the holiday season we offer Christmas trees repurposed from larger pine tree removals. These tree tops make a gorgeous addition to the family home. They are fresh cut and last a long time.
Chemical Treatments and Fertilization: At this time we do not offer chemical treatment or fertilization services. Bark beetles and fire-blight are difficult to impossible to get rid of after infestation and removal is often the best recommendation. Preventative treatment is best way to avoid bark beetle infestations. Iron deficiency is a common problem in our region and can be treated successfully.
